Choosing the Best Hearing Aids for your needs

When it comes to choosing your hearing aid system, it's essential to find one that's both comfortable, and suits your lifestyle. There are many different styles to choose from, including invisible, behind-the-ear and in-the-ear. While the style is important, your hearing test will help to determine the most suitable type for you.

Types of hearing aid

Most hearing aids fall into two categories - analogue and digital. Digital hearing aids are very much more common, and have just about taken the place of analogue ones due to their efficiency, and ability to offer a much better quality of sound. They also allow you to change their settings to suit your environment, making them much more flexible.

Once you've had your hearing test, the audiologist will be able to advise on the kind of hearing aids that are most suitable. Here at Amplifon, we provide three main types as follows.

Invisible hearing aids sit inside your ear canal. They're a great option for those that feel a little worried about having to wear them, as they often go completely unnoticed by others. They feature some of the best technology in digital hearing aids, and are a discreet way of responding to hearing loss.

The behind-the-ear style of hearing aid will perhaps be the most familiar. This style features a case that sits behind the ear, with a thin wire or tube taking sound into the ear. They usually have a small receiver at the end of this tube that sits inside the ear canal.

Behind-the-ear hearing aids are suitable for people with a range of hearing loss levels, from mild to severe, and they come in different sizes according to the power and strength specification you need.

In-the-ear hearing aids come in a variety of sizes. You can choose from those that sit completely in your ear canal - ideal for if you'd rather they went unnoticed, or those that fit in a mould of your ear outside the canal, making it great for easy handling.

Things to consider

The type of hearing aid system you choose really depends on what you're most comfortable wearing. Some may find an invisible hearing aid to be too small to handle, whereas others may find a behind-the-ear style to be less convenient. At Amplifon, our Hearing Aid Audiologists can help you choose the right type, find what you're comfortable with and advise on what's best.

Other important factors to consider include:

How much do you want to spend?

You may find having the latest in hearing aid technology to be important, but if your main concern is improving your hearing in just a few problem situations, you may find a more basic model will meet your requirements. It's important to make sure you get the right fitting to suit your lifestyle - going for the most expensive doesn't necessarily mean it'll be the right choice for you.

Consider longevity

Will your chosen hearing aid be suitable in a few year's time? Will it be able to adapt if your hearing improves or worsens? Choosing a hearing aid system capable of adapting to your changing requirements is another factor to consider. If you notice you need a different level of assistance to hear in different environments, then hearing aids with different environment settings may be beneficial.
